Smart Bike Trial

The Smart Bike Pilot is testing the latest in bike share technology. The trial bikes have onboard technology that allows them to be rented quickly via multiple methods, including integration with transport cards. The Smart Bikes also communicate with a low power sensor inside the Smart Sign. Bikes like these could form the basis of a high quality bike share system, integrated with Public Transport.

Metro card integration has been achieved with the latest metro cards as a proof of concept. No integrated billing is happening at this stage.

The Smart Bike’s are currently on trial with various organisations. If they are currently in your workplace, and you’d like to sign-up to use them. Then follow the instructions below, or fill in this form and we’ll get you signed-up.

The Smart Bike Pilot was funded by the Christchurch City Council’s Transport Innovation fund, with support from Environment Canterbury, Spark NZ, and Nextbike.

Use the Smart bikes:

1. Register

- Create an account here

- Select - Partner - "Metro Card Christchurch". Enter your metrocard number (a reminder this needs to be the new style card)

- A credit card may be required if you're not linking a metrocard.

- Email hello@chchbikeshare.co.nz for assistance.

Already a Christchurch Bike Share user?

You're all set to ride via bike computer and app. If you'd like to use your metrocard then add your metrocard details to your nextbike account, or hold your card against the bike computer and enter your registered mobile number.

More information on the metro integration.

We’ve worked with Environment Canterbury to integrate card numbers. At this stage its only the latest version of the metro card. That’s the card with this design:

If you have one of these cards, you can link it to your existing Nextbike bike share account.

It’s important to note that no billing happens against your metro card. At this stage the integration just gives you another way to release the smart bikes.
